Leeds sits in the heart of Yorkshire and is the biggest city in the region, with over three-quarters of a million residents making it the third biggest city in the UK by population. Bradford, less than 9 miles away, has a population of over half a million people.
There are 109,000 companies based in Leeds City Region as well as eight universities and strong transport links. Growth industries include manufacturing, the digital industry and the financial and legal sector.
However, the director for public health in Leeds has pointed to a worrying trend of worsening levels of deprivation, and a decline in life expectancy for women compared with increased life expectancy nationally. In Leeds infant mortality is increasing; young women are increasingly affected by mental health problems and self-harm, as well as alcohol related deaths; and more men are dying from drugs overdoses and suicide.
Bradford, according to an Office for National Statistics Regional Trends report in 2009, has areas suffering from the highest levels of deprivation in the country, with infant mortality double the national average and life expectancy lower than in other parts of the district. The 2011 UK census lists Bradford as having the youngest, fastest growing population outside London.
