Low Bank Ground and Hinning House are Wigan Council’s Outdoor Education Centres in the Lake District, managed on behalf of the Council by Brathay.
We provide high quality, enjoyable learning through the outdoors for children and young people.
Our qualified and experienced teaching staff offer courses where the emphasis is on an adventurous approach to the exploration of 'natural' environments such as mountain, forest, lake and river. We have a wide range of resources available and the necessary experience to be able adapt our standard course to accommodate requests from school or college groups. We work with visiting staff to provide the range of activities they need, whether this is to focus on a relevant curriculum area, team building or environmental issues.
Priority is given to Wigan Council schools but there are usually available dates for other groups.
If you'd like to check availability we'd love to hear from you. You can either:

Knowing we were going to do completely different things, made me unsure of how to think of it, but when we did the activity, I realised it was really fun. I think the mountain was the biggest challenge. Low Bank Ground released the explorer inside me!
Situated on the shore of beautiful Coniston Water, Low Bank Ground is the perfect base for all outdoor activities with easy access to the lake and the Coniston Fells.
The Centre can accommodate up to 52 people in two self-contained buildings - Highfield and Rough Close - which can also be hired separately. As well as tailored residential stays for schools and youth groups, Low Bank Ground is also available on a self-catering basis for independent groups.
Highfield sleeps 36 in 10 bedrooms – five of which have en-suite bathrooms – in a mixture of bunk and single beds. There is also an additional high dependency suite with two profile beds, air conditioning and full hygiene facilities.
Rough Close is a traditional Lakeland building which sleeps 14 in four bedrooms, each with their own bathroom.
As well as the main dining facilities, Highfield and Rough Close both have a small kitchen, social areas with television and DVD player, drying room and Wi-Fi access.
Activities can be provided for your group by booking a member of centre staff in advance of your stay, this gives access to the full range of centre pursuits and all the necessary equipment. Use of the either building allows access to the lake shore where we have a jetty, a small pond suitable for introductory kayak sessions and barbecue and campfire area.
I had a great time, thank you! It was the best 5 days of my life. You have made me realise things about me that I have never noticed before.
Our experienced and well-qualified teaching staff have a peerless track record of delivering inspiring and safe outdoor learning. We hold the AHOEC (Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres) Gold Standard, LOtC (Learning Outside the Classroom) Quality Badge and AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) Licence.
