Low Bank Ground and Hinning House are Wigan Council's Outdoor Education Centres in the Lake District, managed on behalf of the Council by Brathay.

Our qualified and experienced teaching staff offer courses where the emphasis is on an adventurous approach to the exploration of 'natural' environments such as mountain, forest, lake and river. We have a wide range of natural resources available and the necessary experience to be able adapt our standard course to accommodate requests from school or college groups. We work with visiting staff to provide the range of activities they need, whether this is to focus on a relevant curriculum area, team building or environmental issues.

Priority is given to Wigan Council schools but there are usually available dates for other groups.

I thought Hinning House was not going to be that good because I would be away from my family too long, but I changed my thoughts about it and it was a fantastic time. The best thing I did was Ghyll scrambling. Thanks a lot Hinning House it has helped me a lot.

Hinning House is a purpose-built outdoor centre in the beautiful Duddon Valley, close to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

The Centre is in a spectacular location, surrounded by superb places for rock scrambling, climbing, hill walking, orienteering and mountain biking. There are also beautiful valley walks along the River Duddon, visits to a local hill farm can also be arranged.

Hinning House can accommodate up to 30 people, all under one roof, in seven bunk bedrooms. Four of the rooms have six beds, and three have two beds; all bedding is provided.

Hinning House has a cosy atmosphere offering tailored residential stays for schools and independent groups, including healthy meals and a full activity programme led by expert staff; the centre is also available on a self-catering basis. If you are staying self-catered our staff can be booked to run outdoor activities.

There is a very well equipped kitchen with commercial grade equipment, including a ‘pass-through’ dishwasher; as well as a large dining room, drying room, lounge area, computers with internet access and a multi-media DVD-enabled Smartboard. Hinning House has full central heating, as well as a wood burning stove.

It is very good you should try it out! It was the best trip I ever went on! If I could do it again I would. I got to know people better. I did things that I thought I couldn't do.
