This exciting river descent set in stunning scenery in Scotland will challenge you as a canoeist and equip you with some lifelong team working skills.

This open water river descent from Aviemore to the open sea will introduce you to the fun and challenge of tackling white water.

You paddle in 2-man canoes and move camp each day as your journey progresses. The trip lasts five days and you get to wild camp on a river island with the possibility of seeing dolphins and Minke whales at the end!

This trip qualifies as a DofE Gold Residential and is a real opportunity to develop your moving water skills in an open canoe. You will carry all you need within the canoes so some previous experience of open canoes is recommended, along with a real sense of adventure.

What to expect

The River Spey is perfect for an extended canoe trip, winding its way through the beautiful and inspiring forested landscapes of central Scotland, from Aviemore to the sea at Spey Bay near Kingston. There’s a sense of remoteness and a need for self-reliance. Several straightforward rapids give you an opportunity to advance and fine tune your canoe skills and provide challenge and excitement to suit all levels of skill within the team. Training in essential manoeuvres and safety techniques for the whole team will happen on flat water before setting off down the Spey.

More about the trip

You will be supported by experienced staff who will mentor and guide your team through the trip. Developing leadership skills and knowledge will be central to the challenge as team members progressively take on extra responsibilities each day. Developing your canoe skills, making navigational decisions on the river, supporting others and mastering cooking on an open fire are all part of the fun when travelling by canoe.

You will meet at Brathay Hall in Ambleside and then travel to Loch Insh near Aviemore to start our training. Accommodation will be camping throughout the week and the programme will be flexible in response to the capabilities of the group, water levels and the weather. The team will return to Brathay at the end of the week.

This journey meets the requirements of the Gold DofE Residential.

Please note: For safety reasons all our routes may vary to accommodate individual abilities within the group, difficult weather conditions and the availability of accommodation.
