If you love being outdoors and have the taste for a big adventure this 7-day river trip will tick all your boxes.

Set in a fabulous remote wilderness region of northern Sweden, we travel in open canoe through some of the country's jaw-dropping scenery.

You will be put in a small group of 4-6 people with your own leader and will get a chance to develop open canoeing skills, bushcraft and expedition management skills. Think big rivers, awesome lakes, exciting rapids and wild forest camping and you'll soon get the idea! This is a chance to master new outdoor skills whilst experiencing the challenge of working as part of a close-knit team. The expedition qualifies as a Gold DofE Residential.

What to expect

This is an ideal challenge for those wanting their first experience of a self-contained, remote, multi day journey in open canoes. The Harkan River is perfect, winding its way through the beautiful and inspiring forested landscape of central Sweden. There’s a sense of remoteness and a need for self-reliance, as well as an opportunity to get close to the local wildlife.

There will be opportunity to advance your canoeing skills on a mixture of easy rapid and some slightly faster ones. Some experience of open canoes would be helpful, but not essential, but a sense of adventure is. Developing leadership skills and knowledge will be central to the trip as you and the team progressively take on responsibilities for duties and roles within the group as the journey progresses. Developing your open canoe skills, making route choices on the river, setting up riverside camps, and cooking on an open fire are just some of the challenges you will face during the week.

More about the trip

Your journey starts in Sweden meeting the team at Östersund airport to transfer to the town of Lit 30 minutes away, where you will camp for our first night.

From the campsite at Lit the team, our canoes and kit are transported 90kms north to our start point on the Harkan river. We then travel though lakes and, on the river, back to the campsite in Lit over the following 4 or 5 days.  We will wild camp on the riverbanks as opportunities present themselves before travelling back to Ostersund airport to catch our return flights to the UK.

This trip meets the requirements of the DofE Gold Residential.

For safety reasons all our routes may vary to accommodate individual abilities within the group, difficult weather conditions and the availability of accommodation.
