We have volunteering opportunities in Cumbria, in the Bradford, Sheffield and Wigan areas, or in your own home!

Your time will help us to make a genuine difference to the futures of young people.

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Can give a few hours or occasional days

  • Would like to give a regular commitment

  • Are interested in volunteering through work or a community group

  • We have a full programme of events and are always looking for volunteers to help us make them a success. Here are some of the ways you could get involved:

Join the Marathon Team

Support the inspiring Brathay Windermere Marathon and 10-in-10 runners (people running ten marathons in ten days!) by helping as a refreshment station volunteer or a marshall.

It was incredible to be able to cheer on the runners and know I was keeping them safe. I admire their incredible efforts and I soaked up the exciting atmosphere

Collection box volunteers

We have collection boxes placed in local businesses, all managed by volunteers. Just find a busy shop or business in your local community and see if they’d be prepared to host one of our boxes. A well placed collection box can bring in £400 each year.

Fundraising events assistants

We hold regular fundraising events and need volunteer events assistants to help run them. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people and have fun. Whatever you can do, we will be able to use your skills!

Office tasks, research and marketing

Put your skills to good use or learn new ones while volunteering in one of our offices or from your own home.

Gardening and decorating

We have extensive grounds at our Ambleside and Lake District bases, and community bases in Sheffield, Bradford and Wigan where the young people we help spend their time with us. There are always tasks to be done to keep them looking fresh and welcoming.

Group volunteering

Whether you have a team of three or a team of 30, we can find a project to suit you. We have opportunities in the Bradford and Sheffield area, and at our Lake District bases.

Other opportunities

From time to time, we recruit for roles where we need people with a more specific set of skills. This might include mentors for young people, IT or social networking volunteers. We are currently looking for:

Challenge Events Administrator

Someone who can volunteer a day a week or equivalent in the Ambleside office on an ongoing basis to support our Challenge Events Manager as part of a friendly team. Please phone Sarah on 015394 39718 for more information.

Volunteer Case Study - Sharon Callaghan

Sharon has been volunteering with Brathay since February 2014. In that time she has become an important team member supporting with admin, fundraising research & events development. Sharon was responsible for bringing in the prizes for our 2015 Grand Draw. We asked her about what motivates her to volunteer for Brathay.

Name: Sharon Callaghan

About You: I hail from Bradford in West Yorkshire, moved to Cumbria in 2014 to join my husband Mick who manages Stott Park Bobbin Mill on the west shore of Windermere. I am mum to Maria, 23, graduate management trainee at Morrisons, and Liam, final year at Manchester Metropolitan university.

What motivated you to volunteer for Brathay Trust?  I really believe in the cause - Helping young people to make changes that last a lifetime. It's not just short term help but support to change lives.

What does a typical day volunteering with Brathay like for you?  It's very varied - from flogging anything that we can at a car boot sale, to contacting businesses for support for raffles and auctions to helping run stalls at fun days.

What do you enjoy about the role? The staff at Brathay are great to work with and I enjoy being part of the team and hopefully helping them to make a difference.
