Chloe was only 13 when she was first referred to one of our community programmes designed to help with low-level anxiety and feelings of isolation.
Nervous and withdrawn, she was reluctant to take part in any of the programme activities, let only speak up for herself or express her opinions. Yet by working as a part of a close-knit team with key workers and peers she grew to trust, it's fair to say that young Chloe blossomed, not just in herself, but in her natural ability to involve others in a kind and democratic way. As her social skills grew, so did her self-confidence and her ability to lead others and share her inner thoughts and feelings.
Best of all, the impact of the course has stayed with her afterwards. Speaking several months later, here's what she has to say:
I liked everyone being together and spending time to get to know each other. We understood each other’s differences and fears…there were people there I could talk to. I used to doubt people but I'm not as skeptical of people as I used to be because of how I've been treated by staff and young people.
I feel like I got more confident with things, I'll try more things… I think I've started taking more responsibility at home… I'm better recognising how I feel and trying to sort it because I feel I can. I think I've become better at taking part. Before the course I would just sit back and decide not to do anything but now I will take part and it makes me feel happy. I don't pretend to be thinking what people want me to think anymore. Now I will say when things upset me.
