Inside Our Hubs: Latest Community Programme News (August 2024)

5 August 2024

Our community programmes are vital to fulfilling our charity's mission of supporting young people to build brighter futures. Here’s an update on our recent activities as we approach summer.

Families re-building at Brathay after domestic abuse

The latest group of families from our NSPCC DART (Domestic Abuse Recover Together) programme in Bradford had the opportunity to attend a residential session at our centre in Ambleside.

Four families have been participating in Brathay's DART programme, which helps them discuss domestic abuse, communicate how it has affected them, and rebuild their relationships for a brighter future.

For their final session, they visited the Lake District, spending time as a family and support group in the outdoors. Together, they tried new activities like climbing, canoeing on Windermere, exploring the Lakes, and working together through orienteering.

It was incredible to see the transformation in these families. They experienced trauma at home, but now have the tools to support one another and continue building strong relationships.

We really enjoyed our weekend in Ambleside. It has helped us reconnect as a family. It definitely bonded us more. It is something we still talk about. Thank you so much.

534 young people take part in the Junior Citizen Scheme

It was fantastic to be involved in Junior Citizen Scheme in South Cumbria. This scheme, which is in collaboration with Cumbria Constabulary in Kendal and Furness Youth Work Partnership in Barrow-in-Furness, sees every Year 6 student taking part in different talks and activities, providing them with the tools and knowledge to make positive choices.

Key topics included: stranger danger, fire safety, anti-social behaviour, and, our Youth Matters Project Worker Katie, discussed with young people "what is vaping?" and "what are the dangers of vaping?"

It was a fantastic event which 534 young people took part in this year!

Explore & Play: Bradford's Summer HAFs

Our HAF (Holiday, Activities, and Food) programme in Bradford is off to an amazing start!

So far, they have explored Austwick Woods, where the young participants enjoyed a variety of exciting activities, including leaf bashing, crafting clay animals, and making friendship bracelets. The creativity and fun continued as the kids got crafty with nature and stayed active in the park.

The HAF programme is crucial during school holidays, providing a safe and supportive environment where young people can engage in learning and build strong relationships with their peers.

Transforming lives on a Youth Matters day trip to the Lake District

Our Youth Matters Youth Group kicked off their summer holidays with an exciting day trip to our Lake District residential centre.

Before the trip, our Residentials Operations Manager for Young People, Rob, visited the group in Kendal to discuss what to expect and the available activities, enabling them to choose what activities they do. They chose something new to many of them – ghyll scrambling.

We were amazed by each young person stepping out of their comfort zone and challenging themselves. They strengthened their bonds, providing support and leadership to ensure everyone achieved their goals for the day.

During the ghyll scramble, more than half the group took on a big waterfall! Those who opted out showed incredible support to their peers. It was a fantastic day where every young person gained something different. One young person even said it was the most time she'd spent outside in a long while.

We look forward to welcoming the group back at the end of August, when they plan to tackle the high ropes course. We know they'll do brilliantly.
