Brathay to work with local employers

...to inspire schoolchildren to make positive career choices

17 June 2021

Brathay has been appointed a Cornerstone Employer alongside 200 other companies and organisations across Cumbria in a bid to boost careers provision for young people in the region.

The initiative is run by Cumbria LEP and The Careers & Enterprise Company and offers careers support to 40 secondary schools across the county.

As a charity, we were already involved in supporting Walney School with its ongoing careers provision and this further cements the work we hope to continue doing in supporting young people in their progress towards further education and full-time employment.

Cornerstone Employers pledge to offer their time and resources in working to inspire young people across the county. Major employers also on board include BAE Systems, Oxley Group, Lake Land Arts and Hargreaves Enterprises.

Our Chief Executive, Godfrey Owen says:

As a social enterprise charity our work is all about developing young people and families to be the best they can be and part of this includes our commitment to supporting schools in creating an environment where all students focus on a career that they will be inspired by, and make a positive contribution to their community. Becoming a Cornerstone Employer allows us to work in partnership with other like-minded organisations to create a better future for young people.

Cath Dutton, Careers Hub Manager at Cumbria LEP, adds:

We want young people to make the most of opportunities in the communities that they work in and Cornerstone Employers are ambassadors for making this become a reality. We aim to deliver a high quality careers education to all of our young people in Cumbria and we are delighted that Brathay Trust has joined us on this mission.
