Duke of Edinburgh
Gold Award volunteering
Volunteering for your Duke of Edinburgh Award?
We’ve got lots of opportunities for young people undertaking their gold Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) award to volunteer and make a valuable contribution to the charitable work of Brathay.
Opportunities exist all around our Ambleside site to help our estates or hospitality teams.
We’re happy to be flexible - volunteers are important to us. Generally, this is a 5-day volunteering offer but we’re happy to talk through your needs.
This is not a DoE residential however accommodation is available for those participating, either free or for a donation, if our work gets under your skin.
We might even throw in some outdoor activities too!
What's on offer?
- Free onsite accommodation - self-catering or catered
- Volunteering opportunities across the organisation
- Independent living in a new environment
- Development of new skills through work
- Outdoor activity to round off the week with a bit of fun
Five eager volunteers joined us from Liverpool
During their stay we put them up in our single rooms, where they could live independently for the week.
Over their 5 day stay they helped our staff with a variety of jobs from preparing food in the kitchen to cleaning our fleet of pool cars and working on reception. Each young person was assigned different jobs each day and worked individually with members of our staff. This meant that they had to interact with strangers, take instruction and work effectively as part of our team.
It was a new learning curve for me which I thoroughly enjoyed . This experience faced me with new tasks which have helped me gain many new skills.Olivia, Duke of edinburgh participant
