Focus on Furness Appeal
Over 20 per cent of children from Barrow-in-Furness are living in poverty; above the national level for England. In some areas of the district these figures rise to almost 50 per cent.
Children from poorer backgrounds lag behind at all stages of education and are twice as likely to live in bad housing. This has significant effects on their physical and mental health, as well as educational achievement.
While there’s been a rise in the number of children in care nationally, in Barrow it’s increased disproportionately.
The Focus on Furness appeal aims to raise £45,000 so we can:
- Work with Furness young people living in care or on the verge of entering the care system with unstable or difficult family lives. We’ll inspire them to build their confidence and set goals to help them find employment and live independently.
- Work with vulnerable young people, particularly girls, to build their confidence and self-awareness so they value themselves, stay safe and have positive, healthy relationships.
Here’s what Ellie said after taking part in one of our Barrow projects:
I know what a healthy relationship is and the difference between positive and negative relationships…
I’ve changed my friendship group to make me happier and better behaved. I feel more confident.
