What was the challenge?

Will’s mum reached out to Brathay after feeling let down by other services. Will had become isolated and withdrawn. Once full of creativity and ambition, he now stayed in his room, avoided social contact and spoke negatively about himself. His anxiety and learning needs were worsening, and he had no motivation to take part in anything he used to enjoy.

What did Brathay do?

Darren, a community employment coach at Brathay, worked closely with Will and his mum to create a personalised action plan, focusing on achievable goals, structure and emotional support. They discovered Will’s love for drawing, especially Japanese Anime, and his passion for films. Each session was built around these interests. Will was given space to draw using online tutorials, helping him relax and open up. Over time, Will began to engage more, set new goals and enjoy the sessions.

What was the impact?

Will has made remarkable progress. He now travels independently, takes part in social groups and holds positive conversations with peers. He is volunteering at a local charity shop and is building an art portfolio to showcase his drawings. Online, Will has also started a blog to review TV shows
and films, building his confidence in expressing himself creatively and socially. These activities have given him a renewed sense of purpose and pride.
