Case Study | Tom | Mahdlo Youth
School and Youth Group Residential Programme
Tom discovered confidence, resilience, and a new belief in what he can achieve.
What was the challenge?
Tom often struggles to stay on task and listen to instructions. Sometimes, this leads to Tom becoming disruptive at school and at youth group. He also finds it hard to manage his emotions. Tom told us,
“I’m energetic and sometimes I struggle with my energy being high”.
What did Brathay do?
On residential, the staff at Brathay were mindful of Tom’s needs, as well as the different needs of the group. Craig, a trainer at Brathay, quickly built a good rapport with Tom. This encouraged him to stay on task and fully participate in the activities.
When he found things difficult and his emotions took over, Craig was patient and gently redirected Tom to positive activities that helped him re-engage. When we asked Tom about his highlights of the trip, he said,
“I went to the top of the pamper pole and I did a good job in supporting my friends on the water.”
What was the impact?
Tom was extremely proud of himself. He actively pushed himself out of his comfort zone and impressed himself by climbing to the top of the pole twice! With Craig’s encouragement and patience, Tom was able to focus his energy and keep his attention on task. This gave him the confidence to achieve things he didn’t think were possible.
“I enjoyed myself in the activities at Brathay. I think it has helped my independence and confidence for the future. I think other young people with have fun and enjoying learning new skills.”
