Case Study | Taylor* | Elevate
Cumbria Community Programme
Taylor gained confidence in herself, learnt healthier ways to express her emotions, and started prioritising herself and her future.
What was the challenge?
Taylor felt misunderstood. Her dyslexia meant she needed more time to complete her schoolwork, but some teachers didn’t give her the time she needed. This led to arguments in lessons, especially when she tried to stand up for herself but was seen as answering back.
Friendships were also difficult. Taylor often got pulled into drama that felt emotionally draining. Her main support was her boyfriend. When that relationship ended halfway through the programme, her mental health declined. Her poor behaviour in school peaked, she skipped lessons, spent lunchtimes alone and felt there was no one who understood how she was feeling.
What did Brathay do?
Taylor attended weekly 1:1 sessions with Hannah, a youth worker at Brathay. These became a safe space where she could talk openly and feel listened to without judgement. They talked about communication, focusing on tone of voice and how to express her feelings without going into defence mode. This helped Taylor find a balance between voicing her opinions and being heard without shouting or being rude to teachers.
Despite being the only girl on the programme, Taylor attended nearly every activity day. It didn’t faze her! She took on challenges with an open mind and confidently pushed herself to try new things. Taylor said, “the residential was the best thing I have ever done”.
What was the impact?
Taylor now feels more in control of her emotions, behaviour and her relationships. Her confidence and self-belief have improved, and she feels better equipped to cope with the challenges she faces at school. Taylor also realised the importance of prioritising herself. She has rejoined a boxing club outside of school and is excited to join the Brathay youth group in her local area, something she would never have done before Elevate.
*Names have been changed.
Having 30 minutes on a Tuesday to freely speak my mind is just a huge relief. Hannah always listened to me, without judging me. Thank you for giving to space to focus on myself.
