Case Study | Parker* | Counselling

Bradford Community Programme

With a little support, Parker learnt how to manage his anxiety, rebuild his confidence, and take positive steps towards college and new friendships.

What was the challenge?

Parker was referred to counselling after severe anxiety and bullying left him unable to attend mainstream school. He wanted to feel less
anxious meeting new people and hoped he would be able to attend college.

Even at the Medical Needs and Hospital Education Service (MNHES), Parker found the environment overwhelming. He could only manage one session a week and came in through a side door to avoid busy spaces. He found leaving the house difficult because his confidence was so low.

What did Brathay do?

Parker was extremely nervous to start counselling. Simple icebreakers helped him feel at ease. Rachel, the practitioner supporting Parker, stayed clear and calm and let Parker set the pace. Tools such as the Wheel of Life and the Worry Tree helped him to talk about his feelings, the challenges he faced and the goals he wanted to work towards.

As college approached, he worked through his worries and found reassurance in having a plan and a backup plan. Over the summer, he agreed to visit Brathay, choosing how and when the sessions ran. He met different members of staff, tried new activities and surprised himself by enjoying a game of pool.

What was the impact?

Counselling gave Parker space to understand and express how the bullying had diminished his confidence. He learnt strategies that help him manage anxiety in real situations, from visiting busy places to handling unexpected changes.

Parker is now at college, where he has made new friends and is feeling much more confident in himself. His mum reached out to Rachel and said, “thank you for helping Parker so much. You’re an absolute star”
