What was the challenge?

Niamh, a bright and capable student, had become increasingly disengaged from school. What began as minor issues like refusing to fix her uniform or showing poor attitude, escalated to frequent removals from lessons. She was at risk of suspension, and staff were concerned about her ability to manage her behaviour. As a result, they questioned whether she could be trusted to attend the school’s trip to Normandy

What did Brathay do?

Niamh was referred to the Elevate programme and committed fully! With her youth worker, Petra, she explored how communication style,
particularly tone, could influence how others responded to her. This helped improve her interactions at school. They set short and long-term goals, including attending the Normandy trip and pursuing her ambition of working with animals. She also received support to build confidence in her appearance, which helped her comply with school rules.

What was the impact?

Niamh’s transformation was clear as her teachers noticed how much her behaviour improved. She became more aware of how her actions
affected others and developed the confidence to manage challenges calmly. She took pride in her appearance and achievements, giving
herself credit for the changes she made. Her success in earning a place on the Normandy trip boosted her self-esteem and proved she could
make positive choices.

Within the Elevate group, Niamh became a team player, encouraging others, embracing challenges, and supporting peers. The programme
helped her to believe in herself, improve her relationships and stay focused on her goals. She left Elevate not only more confident but also more determined to thrive, both at school and beyond.

It really means a lot. It’s lovely to hear that Niamh’s made such positive progress, and I’m so grateful for the support and encouragement you’ve given her. She definitely has enjoyed and benefitted so much from the Monday sessions and I hope she continues this more positive attitude.
