What was the challenge?

Murtaza arrived in Barrow after fleeing Afghanistan with his family. As a refugee navigating a new country, new language, and new culture, the
adjustment was tough. When he joined the Young Leaders programme, Murtaza was still developing his spoken English and found it difficult to contribute in group settings. He was shy, reserved, and often stayed on the edge of conversations.

What did Brathay do?

Murtaza met Nick, a youth worker at Brathay, who created a safe, respectful environment where he could grow in confidence. Week by
week, he started to feel more comfortable. His English improved, and with it, his willingness to take part. As trust developed within the group, he
began to speak up more and share his ideas.

During Ramadan, Murtaza initially thought he couldn’t join the residential trip but he decided to come and fully embraced the experience. From hill
walking to ghyll scrambling, Murtaza pushed himself both physically and socially. His quiet determination encouraged others and reminded the
group of the strength found in perseverance.

He also played a key role in shaping the group’s “Big Project” to make Barrow more inclusive. He helped present their pitch to local stakeholders,
calling for better access to cultural products, more inclusive spaces, and safe places for young people from all backgrounds to connect.

What was the impact?

The programme helped Murtaza build his confidence and see himself as a leader. He learned that leadership isn’t always loud—it
can come from listening, supporting others, and having the courage to step forward.

He said little at the start but finished the programme standing tall, helping shape a project that could create lasting change for his
community. Murtaza’s journey is one of resilience and hope.
