What was the challenge?

When he joined Scottish Power’s graduate scheme, Jovan struggled to communicate clearly. He often found it hard to articulate his
thoughts or explain things in a way that made sense to others.

The shift from university life into a professional office setting was a big change. Jovan was unsure about workplace etiquette and did not always feel confident about what was expected of him. Networking was another challenge. He was uncertain about how to approach people in the company, what questions to ask or how to build meaningful connections.

What did Brathay do?

Jovan attended online and offsite training sessions, exploring effective communication and emotional intelligence with Brathay, over the
course of one year. He thought the most useful sessions explored what professional behaviour looks like in an office environment. This helped him understand how small actions or habits can be interpreted by others and how to present himself positively.

As his self-awareness grew, so did his confidence. He began to feel more comfortable in meetings and was better able to share his thoughts. Feeling clearer about how to come across in a professional way helped him become more articulate and assured.

What was the impact?

He learnt how to collaborate effectively with people who have different personalities and working styles. Understanding these
differences helped him appreciate the strengths they bring to a team. He now feels better equipped to adapt his approach so that
everyone can work well together.

These insights have made a real difference to how he sees his future. He said, “If I was to become a manager in the future, I would keep these learnings in mind to maximise team output and bring out the best in others whilst being sensitive to their needs”

The programme was very practical and useful for the improvement of soft skills (e.g. teamwork, communication, leadership), as well as highlighting the importance of utilising each team members’ strengths
