Case Study | Bradley* | Re:Connect
School and Youth Group Residential Programme
Bradley discovered courage, calm, and a growing confidence to connect with others.
What was the challenge?
Bradley had been struggling with anxiety, especially around making new friends. He felt safer avoiding people altogether. His anxiety grew so much that he stopped going to his youth club. Brathay’s Safe Spaces drop-in sessions had offered Bradley some respite from his anxiety over the last few years, but he still lacked confidence and needed more support to overcome his fears.
What did Brathay do?
Brathay offered Bradley a place on a residential. He was keen to join but he was nervous about taking part in activities because he couldn’t swim. With support from staff, he was determined to overcome this fear.
During a canoe session, Bradley started to panic about being on the water. Imogen, a youth tutor at Brathay, quickly paddled over to him. To help regulate his breathing, she encouraged him to focus on what he could see. He saw a flat, calm lake glistening in the cold sunshine and the long, gravel path he took from the Hall to the boathouse. By connecting with nature, Bradley soon started to feel calmer and decided to continue paddling with his
new friends.
What was the impact?
Bradley was extremely proud of himself. As they reflected on their experience, the other young people acknowledged how brave he had been on the water. This boosted his confidence and he asked if there were more residentials he could join. Back at home, the impact of his experience was clear. Bradley felt ready to return to his youth club and meet even more new people.
*Names have been changed.
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for reaching out and giving Bradley the opportunity to go on residential. He was both exhausted and excited when he returned which led to tears but that’s usually a sign of him having had a great time. He’s made new friends who he has talked about nonstop, and he is excited about youth club again this week. Thank you.
