Case Study | Bingo Night | Furness For You
Cumbria Community Programme
Young people demonstrate how they have overcome their challenges of loneliness and social anxiety to provide a fun activity for their community.
What did Brathay do?
Brathay’s Furness For You programme aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness amongst young people in Barrow. Over the last 3 years, young people have taken part in 1:1’s, counselling sessions, social groups and activity days to boost their confidence and build connections with others.
In September 2025, 10 young people, who attend the weekly Furness For You social group, came up with an idea! They wanted to host a community bingo night at the Groundwork hub to bring different people from across Barrow together. With support from Andy, a youth worker at Brathay, they planned and delivered every part of the event - from designing invitations and setting up tables, to calling out the numbers and welcoming guests.
On the night, they welcomed 25 guests from across Barrow! For most of the young people involved, this was their first time leading an event and having open conversations with adults from their community. After some initial nerves, they relaxed into their roles as hosts and most importantly, had fun.
"I was nervous at first, but once I started talking to people, it felt really natural.”

What was the impact?
By the end of the night, the young people had a newfound confidence and felt extremely proud of themselves. Every young person said they felt more
comfortable speaking with adults, and 80% wanted to lead future community sessions. The guests were equally enthusiastic as 96% said they would attend another youth-led event, and many commented on how their view of local young people had changed.
The event enabled the young people involved to develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills, while building new links across their community. The Groundwork Hub became a shared space where everyone felt valued and included.
Following the success of the bingo night, the group are now planning a community quiz night and a shared gardening project. They are aiming to continue strengthening local networks and celebrate what young people can achieve when they’re trusted to take the lead.
"It’s brilliant to see the young ones taking the lead, they made us feel so welcome.”
