Welcome to the Brathay Hall estate.
We have a range of rooms, from budget to luxury, for your holiday or break in the beautiful Lake District, close to the picturesque town of Ambleside.
The impressive Brathay Hall is set in 360 acres of mature woodland and rolling pasture at the head of Windermere, with our stunning location the perfect base for your walking or cycling adventure, or simply as a peaceful starting point for families and friends exploring the area.
Ambleside is just minutes away by car, or a picturesque 20 minute stroll, and boasts an established collection of restaurants and traditional public houses, as well as its own museum and independent cinema and jazz bar. If a more leisurely day out is your thing, this attractive Cumbrian town has excellent shopping facilities and is a treat for the outdoor enthusiast.
The Brathay Hall estate is the Ambleside base of Brathay Trust. Our charity’s mission is to improve the life chances of children, young people and families by inspiring them to engage positively in their communities.
When the site is not in full use for our development programmes, we are able to offer accommodation. Profits from offering this go towards our continuing work with children and young people.
Update, Feb 2021:
We're delighted to say that we will be able (subject to confirmation by the government) to re-open our self-catering facilities, and a limited amount of our room-only accommodation, from 12th April.
The government's guidance says that self-contained accommodation can re-open from this date, provided that there are no shared facilities, no shared entry/exit, and that those staying are from the same household.
By limiting how many of some of our rooms are available, we can ensure that we comply safely with all these conditions, and look forward to welcoming you to Brathay Hall again.
Please check below for availability.
All done online, so no delays with printed vouchers in the post – you choose the amount you want to give, and we send you the details to pass on to your family/friends/someone special. They can then book their stay with us in the beautiful Lake District for whenever suits them, topping up the value if they need to, and choosing from our range of rooms.

Covid-19 - Keeping you safe at Brathay
The health, safety and wellbeing of all our guests is something we have always taken very seriously.
The coronavirus crisis has presented us with an unprecedented situation that we’re working hard to respond to, to protect those staying with us and our own staff.
We have been careful to ensure that decisions we have made follow the government’s guidelines, and as these are changed and updated, we’re responding immediately to make sure we are implementing the latest and most effective processes possible to ensure you can have a safe stay with us.
After an exceptionally difficult and stressful period for many of us, we know that you’ll be looking forward to enjoying a relaxing break – our sincere thanks for thinking about staying with us at Brathay Hall.
We want to make sure that the peace and quiet of a stay in our Lake District estate also gives you peace of mind.
We’ve put together a 10-point plan which we hope reassures you that we’re going above and beyond to keep you safe, without spoiling your stay with us.
We know that things are changing fast and that you may be concerned about making a booking that you might need to change or cancel. There’s also a chance that you might not be able to come for your stay with us because of a change to the government’s guidelines.
We’ve adjusted our Booking Policy to give you extra peace of mind. The details are available on the same page as information about our 10-point safety plan.
Through following government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, having a Risk Assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing, we're pleased to have acquired the Industry Standard "We're Good To Go" mark. You can view our certificate here
