Changing Horizons Donate Fundraise Most of our programmes include at least one group residential when we take young people out of their community to one of Lake District centres. For nearly all of them this is an entirely new and powerful experience. Very few have ever been in a rural environment, experienced absolute darkness and complete silence at night or seen, at first-hand, a landscape as beautiful as the Lake District. For many the challenge of this new environment starts to shift their thinking and accelerates behavioural change. In these entirely new surroundings we set challenges for the young people. They work in groups on our rope courses, they paddle 'Whaler' rowing boats across the lake, they climb the nearby mountains, they prepare and present creative art and performances based on their experiences and learning. At the residential I conquered my fear of heights. We had to do the high ropes course and I didn’t want to do it, but my mates encouraged me; they went first and told me I could do it. I was really scared and there was one particular bit where my legs were shaking and my mates were shouting “Come on, come on!” I said “I’ll fall” but they said I wouldn’t and just kept calling me. I had a harness, but it was still scary and then I did it. That was amazing. Mary Rose A donation to the Changing Horizons appeal will fund life-changing residential adventures for disadvantaged young people and buy the equipment needed for those experiences. We’re aiming to raise £15,000 to work with people like Mary Rose to conquer their fears and stretch their horizons.
