  • People Development

    • Garry Cook - Learning and development Consultant

      Garry Cook

      Garry has over 22 years experience working in the people and organisational development arena, 19 of those have been at Brathay. He is a highly skilled facilitator, coach, and coach supervisor specialising in behavioural and attitudinal change at all levels of management. Coaching and mentoring individuals at executive and operational level, he has trained internationally throughout Russia, Poland, Finland, Cyprus and Dubai.

      Garry’s recent work has included an 18 month partnership with the Independent Tribunal Service; providing leadership and team training for 1,100 staff.  This formed part of a major programme to help the transition from public sector to becoming more commercial. 

      Over the last 15 years Garry has also worked extensively with RAF trainers and managers, providing trainer training.
    • Paul Bate - Learning and Development Consultant

      Paul Bate

      Paul joined Brathay in January 2006 having previously served in the Royal Air Force for 28 years. He helped to create a leadership development strategy for RAF officers and airmen and was involved with policy work to help strengthen the core values and ethos of the RAF. 

      Paul has been working in the field of leadership, team and personal development training, in various practical and policy appointments, since 1988. He gained a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership Studies at Exeter University in 1999 and has an NVQ Level 5 in Strategic Management. 

      Since leaving the RAF, Paul has worked with a wide range of public and private sector clients.  He has a particular interest in supporting people and organisations undergoing cultural change and enhancing leadership at all levels.

    • Jim Evans - Learning and Development Consultant

      Jim Evans

      At the heart of Jim’s professional practice lies his belief in individuals building their own success, building relationships and building teams and organisations.

      With a background in education and psychology, his expertise lies in group facilitation and working with individuals, using his insight and intuition developed over seventeen years.  

      His experience ranges from working with young people at risk in therapeutic interventions to senior management teams, providing spotlights, coaching and feedback on their present business needs and issues.

      With a personal passion for the outdoors, Jim creates powerful experiences and challenges that echo many business and life hurdles.
    • Mark Basey-Fisher - Learning and Development Consultant

      Mark Basey-Fisher

      Mark specialises in experiential facilitation and creating behavioural change within organisations. Working as an independent consultant, Mark has worked for a wide range of organisations across Europe, running programmes that focus on leadership development and managing change.

      Since joining Brathay in 2004, Mark has specialised in the delivery of courses for the Children’s Workforce and is currently working with local authorities across the north of England and Scotland. In addition to supporting the Multi Agency Team Development programme, sponsored by the National College, Mark leads Brathay's work with the Scottish Government throughout the Western Isles.

      Mark also holds a degree in Geology, from the University of Nottingham, and earlier in his career spent three years working in Norway for an oil exploration company.
    • Simon McGoran - Practice Lead (People in Organisations)

      Simon McGoran

      Simon has over fifteen years experience within the training and development sector, in addition to being a qualified Occupational Psychologist and MBA graduate.

      Simon is highly skilled at delivering quality solutions and is noted for achieving results within the most challenging environments.  A talented change consultant, trainer and coach, his focus is building relationships at all levels throughout an organisation. 

      Adopting both tried and tested, as well as new and innovative strategies to elicit high quality results, Simon is known for designing, leading and delivering learning solutions; he does this whilst ensuring clients and their organisations learn, grow, change, simplify their lives and multiply their most resourceful performance.

    • Andy Holladay - Learning and Development Consultant (Apprentice)

      Andy Holladay

      Andy joined Brathay in 2001 and for the last three years has focussed on Brathay's apprentice work.  He has developed our Apprentice Programmes to help young people discover and increase their talents as they follow the challenging transition from education into the workplace.

      Working with a range of clients, Andy's focus is on creating excellence in skills that will enable the apprentices to be successful and a valuable asset to their organisations. His passion for the outdoors is transferred into his work, using this environment to create memorable experiences and learning opportunities that reflect challenges the apprentices may face. 

      Since completing a degree in outdoor education, Andy has worked within learning and development, developing his facilitation skills, in addition to which he holds certificates in NLP and TA.
    • Jez Anderson - Head of Programmes (Quality & Performance)

      Jez Anderson

      Jez joined Brathay in July 2001 as a Learning & Development Consultant.  He is now our Head of Programmes, focussing on the quality and performance of Brathay’s consultant and client support team, in addition to his involvement with our Apprentice Programmes and their development.

      Jez actively supports the People in Organisations practice and is keen, whenever possible, to utilise the learning he acquired throughout his MA in Management Learning & Leadership at Lancaster University.

      Jez is also Client Director for UK Skills, providing vital consultancy to them, a role which he and Brathay are proud to be involved with; supporting the work they do in achieving excellence in vocational education and learning through national and international skills competition. 
    • Andy Gill - Lead Consultant

      Andy Gill

      Before Andy's present role as Lead Consultant, he held a variety of roles in operations management at Brathay, whilst still maintaining an active client portfolio, mainly in the manufacturing and engineering sector.

      Andy's current work focuses on the development and retention of talent within organisations; growing middle manager capability and helping functional and project teams increase their effectiveness. 

  • Young People

    • Jenni MacDuff - Regional Development Manager (Yorkshire & Humber)

      Jenni works with young people within the Yorkshire and Humber area. Brathay work closely with local authorities, and other key stakeholders, to provide community and residential programmes within the region.

      Jenni has a background in education and the arts and believes passionately in the value of creative learning and that all young people have the potential to achieve; this principal is central to the Brathay programmes that she is responsible for. 

      Jenni is keen to develop a range of programmes which support young people to excel in education and learning, particularly those who are traditionally failed by formal institutions. This includes working with Looked After Children, and young offenders with Speech and Language problems.
    • Zoe Fonteyn - Senior Youth Worker (London)

      Zoe Fonteyn

      Zoe has been involved in youth work for over 11 years, first showing an interest when still a young person herself.  Her previous work has mainly been with local authorities and has provided her with great experience.

      Zoe has created, developed and managed a number of exciting youth work projects, engaging a wide range of young people.  Her role within Brathay is also varied, typically including face to face and project development with the young people of London. 
    • Clare Dyson - Participation Development Worker (Cumbria)

      Clare Dyson

      Clare joined the Brathay Cumbria team in May this year, previously she had worked at Brathay in 2004 as an apprentice.  Clare has been involved within development training for over seven years, gaining varied experience working freelance.  Her work includes; leading expeditions overseas, outdoor training, working with ex-offenders in the highlands of Scotland and co-ordinating projects in London.

      Clare now looks after Brathay's work with young people throughout Carlisle and Eden area, helping them to get their voices heard on issues that matter to them.


    • Helen Carter - Cumbria Participation Worker (South Lakes / Furness)

      Helen Carter

      Helen joined Brathay in June this year to be part of the Cumbria team. She looks after Brathay's work with young people throughout South Lakes and Furness area.

      Working in youth development since 2000, Helen has gained most of her experience leading youth and adult expeditions overseas.   Helen now works with teenagers to help them get their voices heard on issues that they think matter.


    • Lou Burner - Regional Development Manager (Cumbria)

      Lou Burner

      Previously working at Brathay for eight years, Lou has now returned to take up the role of Regional Development Manager for Cumbria; working with her team who are responsible for delivering Brathay's work with young people throughout Cumbria.

      Lou originally trained as an English and Drama teacher until deciding on a career change and studied for a Masters in Outdoor Education. Following this she worked for Outward Bound and Impact International before joining Brathay in 1998 as a training consultant, and then later as schools manager and development director. 
    • Sharon Brown - Cumbria Participation Development Worker (Copeland / Allerdale)

      Sharon Brown

      Sharon worked for Brathay for over four years as an associate before joining the Cumbria team full time in May this year.

      Focussing in the areas of Allerdale and Copeland, Sharon works with teenagers helping them to get their voices heard on issues that they think matter. 
    • Jill Pinkerton - Business Development Consultant (Children & Young People)

      Jill has been working with young people in a variety of youth work settings for over 16 years after qualifying as a Youth & Community worker from St.Martins College in Lancaster.

      Joining Brathay as a Training Consultant six years ago to work with the Children & Young People team, Jill was responsible for, and also managed, the very successfull National Gangs Conference. 

      Prior to joining Brathay, Jill gained her experience through leading mountaineering expeditions worldwide in addition to the work she did for Herts County Council Youth service for nine years with the outdoor education team.

      Jill is qualified in numerous outdoor activities as well as in NLP and TA.   
    • Jacqui Wallace - Senior Youth Worker (Cumbria)

      Jacqui Wallace

      Jacqui joined Brathay, and the Cumbria team, in May this year to be involved with Brathay's work with young people.

      Prior to that she worked for CADAS (Cumbria Alcohol & Drug Advisory Service) for three years, educating and advising young people about drug and alcohol issues.  Jacqui also worked for a number of years for SCRAS, (South Cumbria Rape & Abuse Service), offering practical help to clients, running assertiveness courses for women and delivering presentations to schools about drug assisted rape. 
    • Julia Wolton - Regional Development Manager (London)

      Julia has been working with young people for many years and has a range of experience. Her qualifications include a degree in graphic design, NLP practitioner and qualified JNC Youth Worker.

      Since working throughout London in both the voluntary and statutory sectors, she has taken on a number of roles; from project manager, Free School teacher and youth worker, to managing the Brixton area for Lambeth Youth and Play Service.  

      Focusing mainly on gang affected young people, Julia has been responsible for the creation, design and delivery of a number of innovative and nationally respected projects. These include; Rap’s New Generation and One Step Ahead music productions, As The City Sleeps film project and the X-it Programme (Guardian Public Sector Award 2007).     

      Julia's youth work is based around passion, creativity, a leaning towards calculated risk taking and a belief in young people’s ability to lead (and a willingness to let them) underpinned by an anti discriminatory approach.
    • Mark Quinn - Regional Development Manager (North East)

      Mark Quinn

      Mark has worked with young people for over twenty years throughout the UK and worldwide in positions ranging from volunteer to senior manager.  His experience is varied and includes work within a Youth Offending Team, Local Authority Youth Provision, outdoor education, schools / PRUs and Connexions.

      Qualifying from the University of Durham with an Honours Degree in Community and Youth Work, Mark recently completed an MBA at Durham Business School before joining Brathay.

      With a personal passion for creating educational experiences, Mark has a reputation for creative and innovative youth work programmes which are as enjoyable and inspiring as they are effective.

  • Fundraising

    • Adrian Sturges - Senior Fundraiser

      Adrian joined Brathay's fundraising team in 2000 following three years working for another Cumbrian charity.  Adrian's move to Cumbria in 1997 was prompted by a career change, after 23 years of working in the retail banking industry in London, he left to work within the charity sector.


      Adrain's work as Senior Fundraiser at Brathay is primarily centred around raising funds from grant making trusts and statutory funders.  This crucial funding helps to support Brathay's transformational work with children and young people.


    • Ali Harris - Fundraising Co-ordinator

      Ali joined Brathay in October 2008 following a move back to the Lake District after living in the French Alps for five years.


      Ali's previous experience centres around tourism but she was looking for a new challenge and so joined Brathay's fundraising team as a Fundraising Co-ordinator.

      Ali provides support to the fundraising team but also has a key role in the organisation of fundraising events; such as the Brathay Windermere Marathon, which raises money to help support Brathay's work with children and young people.
    • Claire Marritt - Fundraising Co-ordinator

      Claire joined Brathay in February 2009 after previously working in a HR role, and had long wanted to take a new direction to work for a charity.


      As a Fundraising Co-ordinator, Claire provides support to the rest of the fundraising team.  In addition to this she is responsible for Brathay's involvement on a number of social network sites, keeping these updated and producing videos to promote our work; one of which is on the new See the Difference website.

      Claire is also studying an Events Management course, the skills and knowledge of which are being put to good use within the fundraising team. 


    • Scott Umpleby - Head of Fundraising

      Scott joined Brathay in 2001 and since January 2009 has been Head of Fundraising. Amongst other things, Scott is responsible for developing the fundraising strategy and managing the fundraising team to ensure its implementation.


      Scott is committed to developing new sources of funding to support Brathay's work with children and young people through integrated community and residential programmes.  

      In addition to funding Brathay's community projects Scott is also developing an events programme, individual giving, and corporate partnerships to support Brathay's charitable mission.

    • Hazel Clay - Fundraiser

      Hazel has worked at Brathay for more than eight years, five of them in the fundraising team. She firmly believes in Brathay's ability to empower young people to change their own lives for the better, and values the fact that fundraising enables her to make a direct contribution to achieving this.


      Her areas of specialism are grant-making trusts and statutory funding, and she is a full and certificated member of the Institute of Fundraising.

    • Lucy O'Donnell - Fundraiser

      Lucy joined Brathay in 2008 following a move to the Lake District in July the same year after working for the National Blood Service in Manchester.


      As a member of the Brathay fundraising team she is involved in the submission of bids to secure funding from various sources. Lucy is a full and certificated member of the Institute of Fundraising.
