Head of Research – Dr Lucy Maynard

I’ve worked both nationally and internationally as a practitioner and researcher. My interests in the area are rooted firmly in practice, the foundations of which were laid whilst working in the USA as an experiential educator. My interest in understanding practice more and more led me to study at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. In 2011 I completed my PhD working with young people and practitioners to understand the process of empowerment in youth development. Now, as the Head of Research at Brathay Trust, my approach is underpinned by a passionate belief in empowerment and critical pedagogy and a commitment to collaborative and participatory work in developing practice.

Associate Researchers and Trainers

Dr Kaz Stuart

As former Head of Research at Brathay, Kaz continues to work with us on specific projects. Kaz specialises in supporting people to have agency, particularly in leadership, to bring about desired outcomes. This is integral to research and evaluation design that benefits the user, fits within practitioner values, and meets organisation needs. Kaz has a background in primary, secondary and higher education teaching, youth work, social care, outdoor education, and research. All as a practitioner, manager and leader. These experiences inspired her PhD that identified a model of collaborative agency for people working across the Children’s Workforce in the UK.
