Brathay is proud to announce that its acclaimed training and development programme has helped the UK Skills team achieve their best ever performance at the World Skills Games in Canada. WorldSkills Calgary 2009 - the skills equivalent of the Olympics saw over 900 competitors from 51 nations compete in 45 skills ranging from landscape gardening, IT and cooking to hairdressing, engineering and auto body repair.

The UK Team, supported by Brathay, has this year delivered the UK's best ever WorldSkills results, with 3 Golds, 6 Bronzes and 14 medallions of Excellence, a truly outstanding performance. UK is now ranked 7th in the world, up 4 places since the 2007 World Skills games in Japan.

Brathay’s role and involvement.

Brathay’s partnership with UK Skills goes back 10 years, providing training and coaching to UK Skills competitors, training managers and team leaders. UK Skills maintain that a large part of the recent success has been the result of the sophisticated model of training & development pioneered by Brathay through this partnership.

Brathay has used its expertise in people development and experiential learning to enhance the Squad and Team training and preparation. This support includes a range of interventions e.g. a number of residential development programmes at Brathay’s Lake District venue. These events include induction to the Worldskills competitions, physical and psychological performance development.

After the Squad has been selected, through a grueling 4 day competition event in June, the Brathay team go onto provide in-depth 1:1 personal development coaching, geared towards helping potential competitors achieve and realize their true potential.

Brathay has also recruited and appointed 3 WorldSkills Team Leaders for UK competitors. They provide essential personal development and pastoral support throughout the entire competition cycle.

Jeremy Anderson, Head of Quality and Performance at Brathay stated “world class learning and development has been key to the success of the UK team. We look forward to supporting them to achieve even greater success at the London 2011 World Skills Games”.
