Cumbria
Brathay is working across Cumbria and North Lancashire with a wide range of diverse partners, from the public, private and voluntary sectors
We work with young people who are experiencing difficulties with their lives. We engage and inspire such young people, promoting their personal and social development, developing their critical awareness, raising their aspirations and enhancing their life chances. Our work is aimed at four key areas:
- Reducing offending and anti-social behaviour
- Supporting learning and attainment
- Developing young people as contributors to communities
- Supporting personal effectiveness
Examples of current work in Cumbria:
Brathay is a commissioned youth work provider for Cumbria County Council delivering ‘Participation’ across the county. This means that Brathay staff are practically supporting young people from diverse backgrounds to get involved in the democratic process. Youth Councils are emerging for the first time in Cumbria and Brathay is supporting their creation.
‘New Beginnings’ is a Big Lottery funded service for Care leavers across Cumbria. This three year service begins in November 2011 and will provide mentors, residentials and specially designed programmes to support over 400 young people leaving the care system in Cumbria.
Aspiring Leaders Programme is a Francis Scott Trust funded programme intended to capacity build voluntary sector leaders across the County. Seventeen young people have signed up to a three year programme of development that includes a specially designed foundation degree delivered by the University of Cumbria.
Our specialist Youth Work Programmes, Experiential Learning Residential and creative Community Development Initiatives, are inspiring young people and communities to embrace their potential, and rise to present day challenges.
Our Programmes are ‘bespoke‘, this means we design, deliver and evaluate them in partnership with young people, and the organisations we work with.
In addition we have a range of existing programmes that can be delivered over a set period of time (six, eight or twelve weeks). All of our programmes have optional accreditation attached to them, include a residential experience at Brathay Hall in Ambleside, and can be delivered in a range of community venues including schools and colleges.
Programmes can include a selection of different experiences and skills for children and young people of all ages including: Life skills, leadership and team building skills, group work and conflict management, motivation and mentoring skills. Programmes can also work alongside young people on issues that affect them. For example families and relationships, health and well-being, crime and consequences, making a positive difference in their communities and decision making skills.
