Developing young people

Brathay specialises in engaging and inspiring young people, many of whom are experiencing difficulties with their lives.

Our unique offering is our integration of innovative approaches such as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Transactional Analysis (TA) to support their personal and social development, critical awareness, aspirations and life chances.

Our work aims to contribute to four key outcomes:

Brathay’s Philosophy and Values

Brathay is an organisation that promotes social justice. We work with and for young people, investing in their development, championing their rights, and challenging the conditions in society that have led to some of their difficulties. We support young people who are experiencing difficulties in undergoing a transition in their life. Our vision is of autonomous and successful young people flourishing in a just and sustainable world. Our values centre around; respect for the individual, education as a transformative experience, the importance of relationship, and equality.

Brathay’s staff are highly skilled, and from a range of professional backgrounds. Brathay’s youth development approach incorporates:

  • A person centred approach, respecting each individuals’ ability to learn and grow
  • Experiential learning as a powerful vehicle for transformation through awareness of self, others, and communities
  • Strong relationships and secure attachments
  • Challenges that ‘spark’ young people’s empowerment
  • Meaningful choices, personal responsibility and participatory experiences

Brathay draws on a range of specialist methods and tools in order to achieve positive outcomes for young people. These include:

  • Community based (in families, in schools, in the local areas) and residential developmental youth work
  • Creative, outdoor and environmental activities
  • Adult facilitation and peer mentoring
  • Short, medium and long term programmes
  • Tools such as NLP and transactional analysis
