A big thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the Brathay Windermere Marathon 2007 a huge success. The event will contribute to improving the wellbeing of thousands of children and young people in the future.

Did you know?

  • Windermere is England’s largest lake.
  • The marathon route is the most scenic in the UK.
  • The route runs anti-clockwise, passing through Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside.
  • Starting and finishing at Brathay Hall, the route around Windermere is exactly 26.2 miles – the required distance for recognition as a full marathon course.
  • The Windermere Marathon was last held in May 2007.
  • The women's 2007 record of 03’07”12 was set by Lynn Manir-Jolley.
  • The men's 2007 record of 02’47”32 was set by Julian Mawson.

We will be available to answer questions concerning the event on +44 (0)15394 39730 at the following times:

Friday 16th May – 09:00 to 17:00
Saturday 17th May – 09:00 to 21:00
Sunday 18th May – 07:00 to 17:00

Event Facilities:

The Brathay Windermere Marathon is being held in conjunction with the Brathay Open Day. Entry for the open day is £5.00 per car.

There will be male and female changing facilities and toilets at the event centre.

Supervised bag storage will be available at the event centre.

There will be distance markers every mile around the course.

Frequent water stations will be positioned around the course offering 500ml bottles of mineral water, SiS energy drinks, and snacks.

Marathon Route:

The Brathay Windermere Marathon starts at 10:30am on 18th May 2008.

The start line is on the B5286 at the entrance to Brathay Hall, Ambleside. Please arrive by 09:30am.

  • Start on the road outside the Brathay estate at Clappersgate
  • Follow the B5286 to Hawkshead and run through the centre of the village
  • Continue south passing Erstwhile, Graythwaite Hall, and Lakeside to the Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge
  • Cross the bridge and follow the pavement for a short distance adjacent to the A590
  • Turn onto the A592 and follow this to Bowness-on-Windermere
  • Follow Fallbarrow Road passing the Old England Hotel and the exit from Rayrigg Road Car park
  • Continue along the A592 (Rayrigg Road) to the junction with the A591
  • Follow the A591 to Waterhead, Ambleside
  • Turn onto the A5075 and then the A593 (avoiding the road bridge over the River Rothay by using the footbridge)
  • Follow the pavement adjacent to the A593 back to Clappersgate
  • Run up the drive into the Brathay estate and finish in front of the Hall
