Brathay Hall, our beautiful Georgian mansion, is set in 360 acres of mature woodland and rolling pasture at the head of Lake Windermere. Since 1946, it has hosted thousands of young people all of whom have benefited from the magnificent Brathay estate and the stunning Lakeland fells and mountains that surround it.

The peace and tranquillity to be found on the estate, enjoyed by visitors such as Wordsworth, Coleridge and Constable, offers guests a unique sense of space. Our enviable location, aligned with the Trust’s inspirational personal development programmes, allow us to help people to flourish and overcome the challenges of their day-to-day lives.

Just minutes from the beautiful Lakeside village of Ambleside, 15 minutes from the National Rail station at Windermere and just 25 minutes’ drive from the M6 our isolation is perfectly balanced by our accessibility.

What to do

Guests can simply relax and unwind in the beautiful surroundings of the Brathay Hall estate; whilst the more adventurous can enjoy the hills and fells and take advantage of one our recommended local walks, suitable for all levels of experience. If walking isn’t your thing, why not take a leisurely stroll down to our boathouse, situated in one of the most picturesque and protected bays on Lake Windermere.

On returning to the Hall guests can enjoy a glass of wine from our extensive wine menu and sample one of our delicious home-cooked meals. Our café/bar is open by arrangement and serves a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, including fair trade tea and coffee and locally sourced real ales.

Brathay Hall is located just minutes away from the beautiful Lakeland town of Ambleside where guests can experience a selection of restaurants and traditional public houses. The town also boasts its own museum and well-appointed cinema.


Brathay Hall is an unbeatable conference venue offering all year round meeting and conference facilities alongside imposing Georgian decadence and state-of-the-art, Scandanavian lodge, accommodation. Our elegant period meeting rooms, compact theatre and on site restaurant and bar, combined with our highly experienced support team, will ensure that your conference runs as smoothly as possible.

Our full-time IT specialists, catering and accommodation staff, and client liaison team allow our clients the freedom to deliver their conference safe in the knowledge that we can confidently meet their needs.

Brathay’s magnificent setting, excellent catering, and fully equipped meeting rooms combine to create an inspiring location for any corporate event. We are the perfect location for a variety of business needs including: Product launches, exhibitions, meetings and conferences, champagne receptions and business weekend breaks.

Accommodation for Professional Development Groups

Brathay Hall and its estate offers a selection of accommodation ranging from single bedrooms, set in delightful woodland chalets, good quality single/twin rooms within the imposing Georgian Hall itself, to our luxurious Scandinavian lodges built in 2009.

All are in stunning locations within the Brathay Hall estate and afford wonderful views across the Lakeland terrain that has inspired artists and poets alike for centuries.

Each room enjoys en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and plasma screen television with access to Free View channels.

The Hall also boast both male and female dormitory accommodation each catering for a maximum of 10 people.

Accommodation for Children & Young People

We have a range of accommodation, located on the Brathay Estate, which has been designed specifically for groups of children and young people. Most of the buildings are situated in secluded woodland, and range from dormitory to self-contained accommodation, whilst one is set in a converted barn, on two levels, close to the river Brathay.


We deliver over 60 creative and challenging activities which have been designed to motivate and inspire young people.

The list involves a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, on the Brathay Estate and beyond, including: Canoeing, Caving, Climbing Wall, Drum Workshop, High Challenge Course, Juggling, Kayaking, Mask Making, Mountain Scramble, Orienteering, Pamper (high) Pole, Raft Building, Tree Abseil, T-Shirt Printing, Rowing and Zip Wire.
