Running a marathon is an enormous personal achievement

Our London Marathon Gold Bond runners not only complete one of the most famous races in the world, but also raise funds to support some of the UK's most vulnerable children and young people.

When applications closed on 6th May a record number of 253,930 had registered for a ballot place in the 2017 event. This is an increase of more than 6,000 from the previous record for the 2016 event.

One of our goals is to inspire people to take up sport and more than 142,000 people have been inspired to apply to run a marathon for the first time in 2017. In 1981, less than 300 of the finishers were women. More than 1110,000 women have applied to run next year - almost a 50/50 split of men and women.
